EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Definition The Data Interchange Standards Association, INC. (DISA) definition of EDI is the transmission, in a standard syntax, of unambiguous information of business or strategic significance between computers of independent organizations. EDI users do not have to change their internal databases. EDI is the common "language" used to get information from one computer to another. Users must translate this information to or from their own computer systems, but this translation software has to be prepared only once. (DISA Information Manual page 1)
At State Farm our working definition of EDI is inter-company, computer to computer transmission of business data in a national or internationally approved standard format.
Why EDI?
EDI will enhance State Farm's capability to reduce the administrative costs of doing business. Electronically transmitting documents in a standard format is a way to increase speed, accuracy, integrity, dependability, and timeliness of data. These benefits can result in reduced costs for our policyholders.
EDI Implementation Guides
Implementation Guides define how the EDI standards are used. Information about nationally approved implementation guides for the insurance industry may be found on the Internet home page for Washington Publishing Company. State Farm company specific EDI implementation guides are technical documents defining the implementation process.
