What is EDI and EFT?

At State Farm® we are committed to efficiently and conveniently processing Property & Casualty medical bills through the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and paying claims through Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).

Why EDI?

  • Costs - transactions are transmitted electronically. No printing. No envelopes. No mailing.
  • Accuracy - information in electronic bills is often more accurate and less susceptible to data transcription errors.
  • Speed - claim data often reaches us in a matter of minutes and hours as opposed to days.

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)

An Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) is the automated exchange of funds and information about the funds' application to a bank account. An EFT is one form of Electronic Commerce.

Businesses are adopting EFT to transmit payments and remittance data electronically as a cost-effective alternative to check payments. Because of the increased usage by businesses, financial institutions are expanding capabilities to originate and receive financial EDI payments and process remittance information.

Most EFT transactions are conducted through the Automated Clearinghouse (ACH) system which was developed as an alternative to the paper check system. This system is ideal for large volume, batch-processed payments. The ACH system supports numerous payment applications including direct deposit, consumer bill payment, and corporate trade transactions.

State Farm supports electronic claim payments (EFT). The following are types of claims that are supported by State Farm using electronic payments:

  • Property & Casualty claims
  • Workers' Compensation claims
  • Health Insurance claims

The enrollment process for EFT payments for each of these types of claims is different.

Note: If you need to enroll for more than 1 type of claim, then you will be required to complete an enrollment process for each claim type desired.
